Hofner Ignition Series Club Bass 500/2

Some basses earn their place in history by accident. In 1964, as the Beatles’ success sent orders for Hofner’s Violin Bass soaring, the factory needed another way to deliver that sound. It already had the single-cutaway Club guitar body in production. Fitting it with the Violin Bass’s 30" short-scale neck created the 500/2 Club Bass: the same deep, woody Hofner thump in a body that sits like a conventional guitar and balances more naturally on a strap.

While the Violin Bass belonged to McCartney, the Club Bass found its own following. Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads is one of its most famous champions. In more recent years, session and touring bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen has also made the 500/2 a regular part of his rig.

The Ignition Series puts that sound within reach of every player. Like the 1960s originals, the body is hollow with a centre bock, with a spruce top over maple back and sides. That gives it the open, resonant voice and percussive attack that solid-body basses can’t reproduce. Two Hofner Ignition 70s-style ‘Staple’ humbuckers feed the classic Hofner control panel, with individual volumes for each pickup, on/off switches for neck and bridge, and a rhythm/solo switch to kick up the level when you need to cut through.

The 30" scale, slim maple neck and featherweight hollow body (around 2.7kg) make it one of the most comfortable basses you’ll ever strap on. It’s ideal for long gigs, younger or smaller players, guitarists picking up bass, or anyone who wants the vintage Hofner vibe without the vintage price tag. Fit flatwounds for authentic ’60s thud, or roundwounds for more punch and growl. It covers everything from beat-era pop to indie, soul and garage rock.
