Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray Special 4 H Violet Sparkle
Few basses have shaped the sound of popular music the way the Music Man StingRay has. Since its debut in 1974 — co-designed by Leo Fender himself following his departure from the company bearing his name — the StingRay has been the instrument of choice for players across virtually every genre imaginable. From the funk pocket of Flea to the melodic drive of Tony Levin and Pino Palladino, the incredible rock lines of Cliff Williams of AC/DC, not to mention the genre-defying work of countless session players and touring musicians, the StingRay's voice is instantly recognisable and endlessly adaptable. Nearly five decades on, it remains one of the most iconic and widely played bass guitars ever built.
The StingRay Special is not a refresh — it's a ground-up redesign of a legend, and the results are remarkable.
The body has been recontoured for a noticeably more comfortable playing experience, sitting better against the body whether you're standing through a three-hour set or tracking in the studio. New hardware across the board has also brought the weight down considerably, making this one of the most player-friendly StingRays ever produced without compromising a gram of that signature tone.
At the heart of the upgrade is a new custom-wound pickup and an 18-volt active preamp — a step up from the original's 9-volt circuit — delivering greater headroom, lower noise, and a tonal range that extends well beyond what previous StingRays could offer. The result is a bass that retains that unmistakable StingRay punch and growl while opening up new sonic territory: smoother highs, tighter lows, and a mid-range with real definition and depth.
The StingRay already earned its place in history. The Special just makes the case all over again.
